AIC recognizes global impact of Canadian agri-food research and innovation on pulses
February 10 – Today, the Agri-Food Innovation Council (AIC) joins Pulse Canada, Protein Industries Canada and others to celebrate UN World Pulses Day.
As demand for protein alternatives increases worldwide, Canadian agri-food researchers are at the forefront of researching and developing sustainable pulses with high nutritional values. Protein Industries Canada, a member of AIC and one of the federal government’s Innovation Superclusters, plays a leading role in enabling the development of new pulse-based products to serve growing global markets.
Canada is the world’s largest supplier of pulses, exporting over 85% of its production. According to Pulse Canada, also a member of AIC, the global food industry saw a 500% increase in products containing pulse ingredients between 2008-2018. With consumer preferences expected to shift towards more plant-based, sustainable foods, pulses will continue to grow in importance as part of our diet.
