Gene editing: Implications for the agri-food sector

We invite you to join us for the fourth webinar in a series of six dedicated to the future of agri-food research and innovation.

Gene editing: Implications for the agri-food sector

In March 2021, Health Canada declared that gene-edited plants were as safe as their conventionally bred counterparts. With its potential to revolutionize the agri-food sector, gene editing technology can enable efficient, precise, and targeted changes to a plant or animal’s specific DNA sequence, allowing for improved resistance to disease and adaptability to climate change.

Join us on July 8 from 1:00-2:30 pm EDT as we discuss the implications of this development and questions such as:

  • How can gene editing contribute to the agri-food sector?
  • How does Canada compare to other countries?
  • How should Canada think about incentives, policy, legislation, and regulation related to gene editing to ensure product safety, encourage innovation, and remain competitive?

Panelists:

  • Ian Affleck, Vice-President (Plant Biotechnology) at CropLife
  • Dr. Ryan Philippe, Director, Corporate Development at Genome Canada
  • Heather Shearer, Policy and Program Manager, Plant Biosafety Office at Canadian Food Inspection Agency
  • Krista Thomas, Vice President, Trade Policy (Seed Innovation) at Canada Grains Council
